Spring isn't really spring in the 9 Mile until we've spotted the elk across from the Community Center. They typically show up in late March and put on a great show for a few weeks, and then amble on their way.
They're in residence now, and in numbers larger than in recent years. It's always a joy to see them browsing on snippets of green while serenaded by the sing-song of birds. If your timing is right, you'll also spot a pair of sandhill cranes that have been likewise hanging around our 'hood.
It's worth taking a slow tour of the valley in the mornings or evenings to perhaps see the critters strutting their stuff.
